The author, Gus Hall, came from a humble family of Finnish immigrants. He worked as a union organizer in the steel industry for many years, and his father brought him into the Young Communist League in 1927 and he would quickly become an indispensable organizer. He would eventually become the general secretary of the Communist Party USA in 1959 and he was continually reelected until his death in 2000. He ran for president on four times, spreading the message of scientific socialism.
Marking the hundred years since Karl Marx’s death in 1883, Gus Hall delivered the three lectures presented here at commemorations organized in Boston, New York, and Berlin. These speeches, exemplifying their subject, are themselves a contribution to world peace and social progress.
